영국 대학원 자소서 SOP 필수 내용 정리!(4가지 포인트)

오늘은 영국 대학원을 지원할 때 반드시 제출해야 하는 자소서 (SOP, Statement of Purpose)에 대해서 알아보겠습니다. 가장 중요하고 수정, 또 수정을 거쳐야 하는 서류인데요. 어떤 내용을 넣는 게 좋은지 여러 대학의 예시를 통해서 보겠습니다.

 

영국 대학원 자소서 SOP 어떤 걸 써야 하지?

우선 구체적인 내용을 보기 전에 자신이 지원하는 대학교의 지원전공 홈페이지를 봐야 합니다. 이 이유는 어떤 과는 구체적으로 어떤 주제들을 어떻게 구성하라고 명시하기도 하고, 어떤 곳들은 단순히 분량만 제시해주기도 하고, 어떤 곳들은 한국 대기업 문항처럼 구체적인 문항과 글자 수를 지정해 주기도 하기 때문입니다.

1) UCL _ Data Science and Machine Learning Msc

Why do you want to undertake the programme or research?
What are your academic interests?
Why do you wish to study at UCL?
What educational experience do you have?
Do you have any relevant work experience?
Have you completed any extracurricular or voluntary activities relevant to the programme?
What are your career aspirations?

 Algebra, Calculus, Probability and Statistics. Candidates should do this under 4 separate headings, one for each area, under which they note the modules/courses in which the content in that area was covered, the grade achieved on those modules/courses, and the key topics covered in those modules/courses. 

 

2) LSE _ Data Science Msc

Your statement(s) should be typed and no longer than two sides of A4 paper. There is no fixed word limit, but we expect statement(s) to be no longer than 1,000 - 1,500 words.

Motivation for undertaking the programme(s)
Academic interests, strengths and background relevant to the programme(s)
Areas of specific interest within the programme(s)
Academic ambitions and/or research interests related to the programme(s)
Any professional aspirations, and how academic work within the programme(s) might help you realise such aspirations
Other relevant information, such as additional reading or research, work or other relevant experience that has informed your decision to apply for the particular programme(s)

 

3) Queen Mary _ Big Data Science with Machine Learning Systems MSc

why you want to study your chosen programme and how it will help your future career aspirations. This should typically be one side of A4 paper.

 

이외에도 옥스퍼드, 에든버러, 임페리얼 같은 곳은 국내 대기업처럼 지정 문항을 2-3개 주면서 해당 문제에 대한 답변을 하도록 따로 포맷을 제공합니다.

 

위 예시에서 볼 수 있듯이 학교마다 요구하는 게 조금씩 다릅니다. UCL 같은 경우에는 엄청 상세하게 내용들을 적어놓은 반면, Queen Mary는 간략하게 이런 내용을 쓰라고 언급해 두었습니다.

 

하지만, 여러 자소서 규정들을 읽다 보면 학교와 무관하게 꼭 들어가야 하는 내용들을 볼 수 있습니다.

 

영국 대학원 SOP 작성 시, 반드시 넣어야 하는 4가지 포인트를 함께 정리해 볼까요?

 

1. 이 과의 지원동기 (Why this major?)

2. 이 학교의 지원동기 (Why this school?)

3. 미래 계획 (Future plan/career plan)

4. 관심 연구분야 (Research Interests)

+ 지원 전공 관련 직장 경험

 

이 4가지 포인트들을 보면 대학원들이 학생을 받는 입장에서 궁금할만한 포인트들인 것을 알 수 있습니다. 왜 이 학생이 우리 과에, 우리 학교에 지원하는지, 앞으로의 계획은 무엇인지, 학문적 기관인 만큼 어떤 연구에 관심이 있는지... 대학원 입장에서 충분히 납득할만한 인상깊은 자소서를 설득적으로 써봅시다.
